Managing Comprehensive Internationalisation of Higher Education

25-26 April 2016 at the University of Venda, Thohoyandou


This comprehensive module is presented by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Unit for Higher Education Internationalisation in the Developing World in collaboration with the University of Venda and endorsed by the International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA). The module will be offered on 25-26 April 2016 at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), Thohoyandou, South Africa. Facilitators will be South African HE internationalisation practitioners and experts.


Target Audience and Module Aim

This advanced Short Learning Programme (SLP) module is aimed at senior and middle management university officials and staff working on comprehensive internationalisation of higher education (HE) in South Africa and SADC countries. The aim of the module is to enhance participants’ knowledge and capacity and prepare them for effective management of comprehensive internationalisation at their institutions. The focus of the module will be on the HE internationalisation concepts, definitions and trends and development of effective context- and institution-specific strategies for comprehensive HE internationalisation. Furthermore, the module will focus on internationalisation of the curriculum and research as well as internationalisation at home, and utilisation of international networks and partnerships in the quest to comprehensively internationalise universities.

  • Internationalisation at Home as a Tool for Comprehensive Internationalisation

  • International Partnerships as a Tool for Comprehensive Internationalisation


Module Outcomes

Completing this module will enable the participants to:

  • Acquire knowledge of the latest trends, concepts, approaches and practices related to comprehensive HE internationalisation;

  • Gain knowledge necessary for development of an effective strategy for comprehensive HE internationalisation;

  • Become familiar with the requirements and approaches for comprehensive internationalisation of the curriculum and research;

  • Acquire knowledge about tools for comprehensive internationalisation of higher education, such as internationalisation at home and international partnerships.


Preparation and Assessment

Each lecture will consist of a theoretical and interactive section. Participants will be expected to read required readings beforehand. Thorough preparation and active participation will ensure participants’ optimum learning experience. In order to complete the SLP and receive a certificate, participants will have to attend all lectures and submit a written case study report (2,000-3,000 words) about 5-6 weeks after the module is presented.


Cost of the Module

R4,000 per person: This includes the course material and lunch, tea and coffee during the SLP on 25-26 April 2016. Please note that the cost does not include hotel accommodation or travel.
